Craig's Cars

1958 VW Beetle

My uncle gave me the first car I could really call mine. It was a '58 Beetle that had been bought new by my great grandfather. It had terrible paintwork, but a lot of character. I put heaps of effort into preparing it for a respray, with all work done by hand. I used a spray bottle hooked up to a vacuum cleaner and covered it with Mazda Muskat Green.
I took it from Melbourne to Far North Queensland, driving 880 miles one day—not bad given its cruising speed of just over 50mph. I explored remote tracks that many a four wheel driver would have baulked at. It was inclined to beach itself on the low sump or body pan now and then, but always came through in the end (with a bit of digging).
My brother had it for a while, during which time somebody did a nice hit-and-run while it was parked in the street. I could have cried.
